Pa Phông in high water season

ĐBP - During the high water season of the Sơn La hydropower reservoir, the Pa Phông Bay (Tủa Thàng commune, Điện Biên province) is as beautiful as a pristine, lively, and romantic watercolor painting.

Pa Phông is a bay on a tributary flowing into the Đà River, surrounded by towering, majestic cliffs. Spanning Pa Phông bay is a suspension bridge, like a red silk ribbon over the azure river, connecting the center of Tủa Thàng to the resettlement area of the Dao ethnic people in Huổi Lóng hamlet.

In late autumn, the Sơn La hydropower reservoir begins to fill with water. Cool breezes blow through, creating ripples on the blue surface of the lake. The distant hum of boat engines echoes as Pa Phông emerges, charming with boats docked and afloat, vast waters, heart-stirringly beautiful amidst the great forests of the Northwest.

For the people of Pa Phông, October is the busiest time of the year. As the water rises, river activities become vibrant again. Large and small boats gently cast lift nets and drag nets to catch fish and shrimp or transport goods. Along the banks, small houses beside fish cages reflect in the water’s surface-bustling yet incredibly fresh and peaceful, like the harmonious rhythm of life the local people share with nature.

Mr. Tẩn A Dành, from Hamlet 2, Tủa Thàng commune, a passenger boat owner, shared: “Right now is just the beginning of the water season, so passenger transport isn’t at its peak yet. This month, I’ll only run 5-6 trips, each earning VND 2 - 3 million. The price is negotiated with customers depending on the distance. For fishermen, they usually work in the morning and late afternoon, with each boat earning an average of VND 250,000 - 400,000.”

With its rich natural scenery and strong traditional cultural identity, since 2021, the local people here have begun to exploit the potential and develop tourism at the foot of the Pa Phông bridge, establishing homestays for accommodation and dining, and offering tourism products to visitors from all over.

Local people care for and raise aquatic products on the Đà River.

Ms. Quàng Thị Hoa, owner of the Pa Phông bay homestay, shared: “After the rainy season ends, the tourist season begins. The Pa Phông bay area is usually calm, the water rises early and clears up faster than other areas.

Foreign tourists visit and explore the Pa Phông Bay.

From September to mid-October is stable. In the first month of the high water season, my family welcomed about 40 guests, mainly providing accommodation, food, and experiences like fishing and boat tours around Pa Phông bay.”

Exploring Pa Phông in late autumn, visitors can immerse themselves in the pristine, majestic natural scenery, learn about the culture and cuisine along the Đà River, explore the reservoir, go kayaking, and more. Visiting Pa Phông this season promises unforgettable experiences on a journey to discover the landscape and people of the Northwest.
